The history of poppers

14 October 2025

Here at room aromas we have over 20 years experience in the adult industry and in particular working with room aromas.

Unlike some of the other websites selling poppers we have used the products for close to 35 years and have been around to witness the changes during this time.

Where did my personal experience start?

Back in the late 80's / very early 90's I was introduced to poppers whilst out partying.

My first bottle and my first rush was experienced inside a night club on the dancefloor. That was the beginning.

Since then I have been a regular user and avid fan of poppers.

The history of poppers

Popper have been around for a long time, the history dates back to the 1840's but lets just skip forward to the time when the product became  known as poppers.

In the 1960's and 1970's Amyl Nitrite was supplied in small fragile glass vials called ampoules. To access the liquid inside you needed to break the ampoule and when you did it made a popping noise, the term poppers was born.

Everyone was enjoying poppers until the 1996 when Amyl Nitrite was banned by the  MHRA in the UK and banned by many other countries for the same reasons.

A replacement was found and the replacement ingredient isobutyl. Isobutyl was then enjoyed for many years, although it wasn't as strong as Amyl it certainly carried a punch.

When I made a decision to open our online store almost 25 years ago it was a natural  decision to enter the adult market and sell products including poppers.

In the early 2000's in the UK the MHRA was pressing legal action to get Isobutyl banned like it did with Amyl. The MHRA failed in there legal challenge and isobutyl continues to flourish and be a top seller.

Everyone continues to enjoy the effects of isobutyl but in 2007 isobutyl was banned in the EU. As a member of the EU the MHRA took the ban back to the courts and used the ruling within the EU in put a stop on the sale of isobutyl.

Fast forward again and today the primary  ingredients in the UK for poppers / room aromas is now isopropyl & isopentyl and more recently we have seen an increase in Amyl Nitrate, not to be confused with the original Amyl Nitrite. These are two different products.

In 2009 I started the UK's number one website for poppers and room aromas, A1 Poppers.

When the authorities did everything they could to cause trouble for all sellers of these products, they even got the manufactures to force all web sites to stop using the term "poppers". The UK's manufacturers flexed their muscles and threatened anyone selling poppers including distributors to halt the distribution and selling of these products to them if we didn't play ball. (They turned a blind eye to a few of their sites though 😉 ðŸ˜‰ )

We played ball and launched Room Aromas.

The UK was gearing up for some changes to the UK laws with the introduction of the Psychoactive Substances Act 2016. This act was introduced to stop the huge influx of "legal highs" that was being introduced to the UK market, many of which were extremely dangerous and deserved to be banned.

During the initial talks when this act was passing through parliament there was a list of substances that was planning to be banned and on the list room aromas was on that list.

Following lots of legal action from the UK manufactures and lobbying from within the UK parliament from MP that was users of poppers before the law was passed room aromas was removed from the list.

In 2016 the Psychoactive Substances Act was introduced and room aromas / poppers was NOT on the list.

This was to difficult for powers that be to understand. (sarcastic tone here.... )

All very confusing and very difficult to get your head around.

A product was removed from the list and was perfectly legal but the credit /debit card companies failed to recognise this decision and started removing the card processing facilities of businesses within the UK that sold any sort of room aromas no matter how it was labelled.

Poppers, Room aromas, Leather cleaner, room odouriser,

Flex their muscles the CC processors stopped any payment processing for sellers of poppers/room aromas. With the exception of course of several of the bigger companies that have big distribution centers, they was allowed to continue selling the products. They made to much money for Visa & Mastercard to loose so they was allowed to continue.

Our enthusiasm eventually drained through years of fighting card processing companies and losing lots of money along the way we finally decided to throw the towel in and turned our back on the industry although we kept our domain names etc.

Fast forward some years later and after some investigation and research I find there is a market once again for room aromas / poppers and even some of the stronger poppers have made a comeback. (Amyl Nitrate)

This is the launch of the new Room Aromas web site.

Well done if you've mate it to the bottle of this page. If you have you deserve a reward so here is a discount code for a 10% discount: REWARD10
